I have recently decided to draw primitive/expressionist portraits within my work as well as collage, to give my work a fresh angle and look into another way of creating portraits. Below are images of the first large scale drawing of David Bowie which was shown as part of the Shaun crit on 01/12/16, and drawings developed in my sketchbook. There are also images of abstract patterns which I combine with my portraits, developed from previous abstract drawing experimentation.

The style of drawing faces was mainly inspired by research into Pablo Picasso and Jean Michel Basquiat. I was especially interested in how Picasso distorted the human face, giving it rawer emotion and energy, something I tried to create in my own work. Jean Michel Basquiats style of drawing people I found even more primitive and bold, again giving the portrait life and raw emotion, but also detail when combined with text, abstract brush strokes and collage. Below is some of the work by these artists I was most interested in. ('Dora Maar' 1938 & 'Dora Maar Seated' 1937 - Picasso, 'Untitled' 1987 & 'Skull' 1983 - Basquiat.
