The next step after creating smaller abstract work in my sketchbook is to recreate this work on a larger scale, along with mixing in new mediums such as collage, in order to begin to explore portraiture as well. One of the artists I have been recently researching is Arnulf Rainer, Who also mixed printed imagery with abstract mark making, mainly with paint. One of his pieces I find the most inspiring is 'Butterbroteserin' (1977, image from photographynow.com). In this piece, a photographed figure in black and white has been worked into with paint. The sweeping gestural marks Rainer has made have added motion/energy to what would have been quite a flat photograph. The marks can also act as guides, pulling the viewers eyes to different parts of the printed image. link to one of the videos watched on Rainer to discover his work:

This technique of adding paint to printed imagery to add motion is something I have begun to explore in my own sketchbook work shown below. This method has worked quite well, but I think would be much more effective if recreated on a large scale. Doing this would also make the gestural brush strokes more effective.
