Abstract Drawing/Josef Albers Research/Lothar Goetz Artist Talk

I have returned to my sketchbook to look at other ways I can create abstract grounds to mix with collage and other methods of portraiture. I have begun to use drawing materials, moving from strong abstract expressionist influences to more hard line methods, focusing on line and shape. Examples of rough sketchbook work:

I have also attended an artist talk by Lothar Goetz, in which he discussed his work. Like my work, he also often combines paint/drawing materials, working with abstract shape and line. This was also influential towards my drawing. Lothar's work is shown below

One of the artists also influential to my drawing/painting style has been Josef Albers. His hard line work focusing on shape contrasts heavily with abstract expressionist artists I have previously looked at, and I believe this offers a fresh perspective on how to use colour and shape when creating work. Pieces I make in this style could be ripped up and used as part of collage exploration, or repeating patterns could possibly use alongside portraits I create. Two pieces by Albers I have recently looked are part of his 'Homage to the Square' series (1997, Oil on Masonite) Images from albersfoundation.org.
